AGI is human-level intelligence, and ASI is superhuman intelligence, but I’m not convinced the distinction matters.
Think about it.
ChatGPT can write chunks of code from scratch or identify small bugs, but it can’t add a feature to a complex software project. This is a difference of degree. AI just needs to get better at doing the things it can already do.
This difference of degree is the main justification for saying that ChatGPT is not AGI. It can’t quite do what humans can do.
But here’s the thing. If ChatGPT were a bit better — if it could implement a software feature across a complex project or write a compelling novel — we wouldn’t just have AGI. We would get ASI for free.
Why? Because human-level AI would not just give us more humans to do work. It would give us humans that could communicate at the speed of electricity, never needed to rest, and could be duplicated until we fill every computer on the planet.
